Anishinaabe artist Sarah Agaton Howes' signature heart berry (strawberry) motif is called ode'imin in Ojibwemowin language. Heart berries have been a guiding theme in her work for years, appearing in regalia, beadwork, and in the first earrings she made with Eighth Generation years ago—the Fierce Heart Mixed Media Earrings.
For her Fierce Heart Small Hoop Earrings, Sarah has updated her design but kept her message fierce. Twining vines, green leaves, and yellow blossoms run throughout, but the design is firmly planted with ruby red heart berries. "It's what's inside that counts: listen to your fierce heart," shares Sarah. "I am in love with the idea of bringing together traditional Ojibwe designs with everything from metal to murals."
